WAI operates, manages and maintains the Analytical Services functions of the Hanford 222-S Laboratory in Richland, Washington, a critical element of one of the world’s largest nuclear cleanup efforts. Staff at this HazCat-III nuclear facility receive, handle and store up to 10,000 tank waste samples a year, performing up to 25,000 analyses on these samples, and report their results to DOE contractors. Samples handled in the lab are typically highly radioactive, the residual product of five decades of nuclear weapons production. WAI’s partner, TestAmerica, links the 222-S lab to the largest system of environmental laboratories in the world.
